The economic crisis of 2008 changed my life in an instant. In the darkest times, my determination and faith gave me the strength to pull myself back up with a newfound perspective on life and what matters most.
For years I worked in the family heating and air conditioning business, eventually becoming part-owner before selling the company. This marked a turning point in my life, leading me to venture into building homes. I obtained my contractor's license and dedicated myself to this exciting business endeavor for 8 years. Those were amazing years as I built a lot of homes and was able to provide a different lifestyle for our family.
In 2008, however, the economy crashed, turning my financial situation upside down. Within 8 months, I lost my business and my savings. I went from having a net worth of millions to carrying serious debts. Facing the urgent need for employment to support my three boys, Jake, Ethan, and Walker, I took a job as a police officer.
After all we had been through, being a police officer gave me a new perspective and something to focus on as I processed all that we had lost. I worked in rough areas of Atlanta, placing my life on the line daily. Despite this, it was very fulfilling work, serving my community in a meaningful way. Because I joined the force at 40, I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the physical demands of the job for long.
My family and I dealt with the financial repercussions of the market crash for years—I needed a way to get us out of the hole we were in. On the side, I began remodeling homes with my building license. This brought in extra income, and perhaps most importantly, it brought some much-needed excitement and hope. I left the force and refocused my efforts back to doing what I really enjoyed. My faith was crucial through these times, guiding me forward.
My wife and I worked tirelessly to salvage her credit and slowly rebuild our financial standing. We bought an inexpensive home and managed to make a small profit when we sold it. We repeated the process again, which was a huge step in regaining our footing. Finally, we could see the end of a long ordeal.
Throughout this time, I recognized real estate as a fantastic way to carry on my passion for serving others. It helped us transform our financial situation and reach a stable place once more. I wanted to help people use real estate as a tool to achieve their goals too. In 2020, I became a licensed REALTOR®. Gradually, I established myself, and as the real estate market in Atlanta picked up, so did my business.
Raising three sons during this financial crisis turned out to be a blessing in disguise. They learned, just as I did, that while money and possessions can come and go, the support and bond of family is enduring. I’m no longer driven by wealth, but instead on how I can genuinely help people. Having learned to be prepared for anything, I strive to help my clients make smart investment decisions. I want to be a resource, using my experiences to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.
Looking back, the journey was arduous, but also incredibly humbling. The crash didn't just test my limits; it redefined them, teaching me that with hard work and unwavering determination, recovery, success and fulfillment are always within reach.
My faith has been a guiding light, and I enjoy sharing that with others as a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon and Lay Pastor, which I do live on Facebook every Sunday. I also lead an archery club that’s been active for 25 years and participate in Kiwanis to give back to the community.
